Internship Overview

This summer of 2021, I interned at Amazon as a UX Design Intern in the AWS Detective team. My team helps security analysts analyze and visualize security data to rapidly get to the root cause of potential security issues. I was tasked to work on a new workflow that helps security analysts triage findings (something unexpected and potentially malicious activity in a user’s environment).

As the UX Design Lead for this project, my role consisted of:

  • Leading and facilitating weekly meetings with stakeholders (Product Managers, UX Designers, Data/Security Engineers)

  • Collaborating with a UX Researcher to conduct user research and testing

  • Designing wireframes

As a result, I delivered a new flow with data visualization that helps security analysts receive important information they need in order to prioritize what to investigate in first. This feature will be released in Q1 2022.

Learnings & Takeaways

UX Design is Interdisciplinary

Majority of my time was spent collaborating with data engineers, data scientists, and UX designers all from different backgrounds. I took action by scheduling my own meetings with stakeholders to get the feedback that I needed as well as conducting research to validate my designs and make sure that they were feasible and accessible. This gave me the opportunity to improve my decision making skills and apply my customer-first thinking to back up my design decisions.

Disagree and Commit

I learned to proactively seek for critique, but also make sure to be confident in my own design decisions. After every meeting with stakeholders and my team, I received a lot of valuable feedback from different perspectives which made it challenging to apply all the feedback into my designs. Throughout my internship, I learned to advocate for my final design decisions and make informative decisions based off of research and talking to customers.
